About the Subject

Big Spring, TX native Charely Johnson played basketball & QB at New Mexico State with a 23-9 record in football. 1st & only back to back Sun Bowl MVP (1959 & 1960) & only player in school history to have jersey retired. Member of the NMSU Sports HOF. 15 year NFL QB with St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Oilers & Denver Broncos. 1963 NFL Pro Bowl Selection. Career stats 165 games, 1,737 completions, 170 TDs & 24,410 yards passing. Won 60% of games started. Denver Broncos Ring of Fame. Earned a doctorate in Chemical Engineering while playing pro football. Currently a professor of Chemical Engineering at NMSU.
